Since starting mishmash I’ve been trawling through new releases more than usual. November was the month of Vampire-Survivor-Likes. So many clones. I’ve also come across some unique titles, a recent fave being ‘Cookie Clicker But You Type’. Gotta respect that simplicity. Almost worth dropping the couple of bucks just for the fist bump. The wildest title I’ve seen has to be ‘The Impregnation of the Elves: Conquest of the Arrogant Fairies by Impregnation’. Yeah. Let that sink in.
Itch remains its amusing self. Putting aside that when searching for the latest paid games 80% of the top results were pron, there was a superb macOS exclusive game called Delatrune, simply described as ‘its deltarune but everyones on meth.’ I love the variety that Itch brings to gaming, no matter how disturbing and weird it gets.
My last couple of months has been fairly chaotic, including the new computer and mishmash. I’ve not had much time for games that aren’t on this site. I seriously considered getting Return to Monkey Island due to the hype around it. Ultimately I’m a bit too worn out by disappointing revived franchises to even give it a chance. Maybe I’m too cynical at times but I don’t feel like I’m missing out. The first two games will probably remain all you need.

I went 100% on Railbound. Worlds 6-8 were mostly on the easier side except for a handful of head scratchers. There’s about four puzzles in the game I really struggled with. Other times the limited space and available tracks actually made it easy to guess the solution on instinct.
Also finished off Resident Evil Village. The last section of the game, in the factory, kept me on my toes. I’d clearly mismanaged some stuff and ended up with too little ammo. Almost certainly hoarded too much money and didn’t upgrade my weapons soon enough and thus used up more ammo. It did make the factory exciting. I started to do knife kills just to be sure I had ammo for when I really needed it. Somehow I scraped through and after that it’s plain sailing with loads of ammo top ups. The final run goes full on action. I had just enough left to deal with Miranda at the end. It’s a great game. The visuals of the fairy tale intro and outro look gorgeous. It’s stylish and menacing throughout. I still think the merchant is a misfire and they know it when he jokes about not knowing what he is. But hey. I wish I could rank it but I’ve not played enough of the series. Oh, and the end credits song is awesome.

Dipping into more free games I played through Flicker of Hope (2020). It’s a 3D horror game on Steam. Quality graphics and the concept of playing as a candle that must keep it’s flame lit, makes a perfect partner for dodging a lumbering creature around a castle. I decided against putting an entry on mishmash because I’m only doing that for games I would recommend. Flicker of Hope is a good game but for macOS it’s a bit buggy. Didn’t recognise my PS5 controller so I used keys. It was a little jumpy occasionally but most of the time played fine. When the end credits were about to start it crashed. I guess that’s the best time for it but it’s not good. So I can’t be sure of macOS compatibility. Of course, seeing as it’s free there’s no harm in trying your luck. It’s not particularly hard and should take about 40 minutes.
And that is the sort of insights you can expect to see in future Side Quest posts. Don’t forget to smash that close tab button and open up GOG Galaxy.
