Side Quests 3

Not much to report from my extra curricular gaming. Been taking it a little easy this month. Thought it still worth noting a couple of completions and the game I’m unsure about.

Firstly, I finished Sail Forth. I liked it enough to sink 40 hours into a thorough play through. I also sank three ships from my fleet in the final battle. The last boss was okay but felt like it was designed more for a cinematic end to the story than an especially good fight. Those three ships of mine were lost in ridiculous ways like capsizing from a sharp turn. Although being down to your last ship in the climactic battle is how it should be for a tense finale.

It had a suitable happy ending and everything I said in my past post held true for my game but there has just been a significant update to the game. Improvements to fleet AI and ability to manage ships. Also some sensible sounding tweaks to upgrade progression. The dev is committing to more updates throughout the year. That’s good news because despite a couple of rough edges it’s a game with lots of charm and a great setting.

I surprised myself by completing Luck be a Landlord. It just became addictive. Twenty floors. Forty three hours apparently – really?! The last few floors went much more smoothly than I expected. It seemed like I got some lucky drops, such as the thing that gives more removal capsules; essential for pruning a good deck quickly. Or is it possible that I learnt how to score better? That sounds shockingly implausible but maybe. Either way I only managed 98 out of the 186 achievos. That’s an insane target for anyone.

I don’t have any hard rules about how I handle this blog, although it follows a basic format. Generally I only make a post about a specific game if I like it. I might still have some reservations (disclaimer disclaimer read the fine print) but I still will have enjoyed playing it and didn’t feel ripped off. Sometimes there are games I have taken a look at and it’s not been my thing or I didn’t play it enough to feel comfortable writing about it and decided to not mention it.

Recently I played a game from the buzz list and am undecided on it. Subnet – An Escape Room Adventure. It’s a short series of logic puzzles in a 3D environment strung together with a story about foiling a terror plot. The puzzles themselves are good, mostly, although many are quite simple variations of the same thing. The last puzzle is actually very good and it had me beat because I didn’t feel like spending any more time on it and looked up the answer instead. Such a cheater but also a sign I was a bit tired of it. The graphics look decent but have a stock feel to them. The interface and movement are so-so. Then there’s the story which is totally disconnected from the puzzles. It doesn’t make any sense that the puzzles would exist in this story. Ironic for a game about logic. That’s a bit jarring for me, even though it doesn’t really matter. It also gives the game a feeling of having been cobbled together without enough thought. So yeah. I’m not sure. Maybe try it on a deep sale or find a better puzzler.

That’s all you get for now. A bit of a chill month for gaming and I’ve been focusing on other hobbies. That said, another game post is on the way very soon.
