Along with announcements about macOS Sequoia, Game Porting Toolkit 2, Vision Pro, and a bunch of other stuff, we got some confirmed new macOS games for this year, direct from the Apple event. Yup, that’s what they said, this year. I don’t know if that was suit speak, or in this case jeans and open neck shirt speak, but I’m optimistically taking it as actually this year. We have dates for some.
Combined with what else has been announced it’s a decent list to look forward to. The majority are older games porting over, but there are some day ones. I’ll go through them in a rough order of importance (as far as I’m concerned). All game links go to Steam or official sites.
Valheim (2021), which is still in early access, just dropped. It also seems to be on sale in the Mac App Store at the moment. Frostpunk 2 is coming day one alongside other platforms on July 25th. One other game this year is arriving day one – Assassin’s Creed Shadows on November 25th. Next year Civilization VII is coming and that too is likely to be day one.
July will also see the release of Resident Evil 7 (2017) on the 2nd of the month. Worryingly close as I still haven’t played RE4 yet. Resident Evil 2 Remake (2019) is also in development, showing Capcom to be one of the most committed devs to bringing their catalogue across to Mac. Ubisoft also seem keen, making a personal appearance at Apple’s event.
Three of the announced games have released in 2024, putting these ports at under a year (fingers crossed). This is a good short window. They are Palworld, Wuthering Waves, and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Prince of Persia has a release date of December 3rd.
Next we have a couple of games from 2023. Dead Island 2 and Robocop Rogue City. And then a few older titles. Control Ultimate Edition (2019), Sniper Elite 4 (2017), and the remake of Riven (1997), which is almost close enough to grab at 25th June.
Other notable games previously known to be in the pipeline are Hades II, Path of Exile 2, Hollow Knight: Silksong. And purely in my opinion, I think we will be seeing Death Stranding 2 around the time it hits Windows, so perhaps 2026.
How exciting this lineup is will depend on taste and whether you’ve already played some of the released games. Personally, it looks pretty good to me. Just enough of it is new or newly released to hopefully show larger devs that there is a market in Mac owners. A few games look to be double dipping with iOS and/or iPad (RE2, RE7, Sniper, AC:Shadows). The sudden increase in big games on iPhone has been an eye opener to me. Things are surely happening.
Anyhow, here’s that list again more clearly. In original release order.
